Why don't you build off of JSR's design and basically make a double-acting pneumatic piston? Basically, all you would have to do is eliminate the spring and place an air input at each end. A 5-port 4-way solenoid valve would allow a microcontroller to be utilized for precise firing rates and the ability to select either semi or full-automatic firing. In addition, you could program it to shoot a certain amount of rounds with each trigger pull.
