propane tank, as air reservoir

Cannons powered by pneumatic pressure (compressed gas) using a valve or other release.

Could a propane tank hold pressure

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but how would a used propane torch cylinder work as an air tank? I assume that they are under considerable pressure from the propane, maybe if the valve was drilled out it could empty the air reasonably quickly. A shraeder valve epoxied on, might be able to withstand some pressure.

They are under anywhere from 20psi-120psi (maybe more?) depending on the temperature, and they should be rated at much higher than that, for safety reasons. Still, the shock compression and decompression isn't good for such a thin walled tank. I wouldn't use it over 100psi, but up to that is fine I would say.

The relief valve on the cylinders opens up at 375psi. The tanks are a lot tougher than you would expect.

We put this together as a little beer drinking project at work. It uses a propane cylinder as the chamber.

The valve was removed, the tank filled with water, and then the valve area was drilled and tapped for 1/4"npt.

The "canon" has onboard charging via 12v compressor and a 3cell 1650mah Li-po battery. It is generaly charged to 100psi, and will get about 30 shots per battery charge.

It works like a charm. :)

You MUST elaborate! Do you have any videos of its operation? If it does what I think it does that would be a perfect addition at my fraternity house.

What do you "think it does"? :)

It shoots marshmallows mainly, and occasionally more "damaging" things, such as pieces of hickory.

No videos.
