This will be interesting....

As some of you may recall, I'm currently working on a pneumatic golf ball launcher. Nothing fancy, mind you. Just a single shot over/under. All metal construction, however.

And therein lies the rub.

All metal construction.

Most of the gun is just threaded sch 40 pipe fittings and such, but I decided that I wanted to brace the barrel properly. To do it "properly" was going to require some welding. Not much and nothing fancy, but welding nonetheless.

I *suck* at welding.

But there's this guy I know... He's good. Put it this way, he's certified to weld stainless steel pressure vessels. Did I say he was good? No, I meant, he's a fracking artist.

So I drop the gun off at his place with instructions on what to weld. I've kept the welding to the absolute minimum. I don't want to waste a lot of his time so I kept it simple.... To the extent that it may look a bit ghetto.

I also included his standard fee for such little odd jobs: A 12-pack of Arizona Ice Tea.

Yesterday I bumped into him at the store and he says to me, "You're gonna owe me an extra case or two of Ice Tea."

I was like, "Huh? Why? What's going on?"

Suffice to say that he decided that the gun deserved more than the quick and dirty ghetto approach.

What exactly is he doing to it? I have no idea, but I'm sure it'll be a lot nicer than what I asked for.

It'll be interesting to see what I get back.

You know, I found a long time ago that a 12pk or case of frosty beverages usually get a nicer job done than cold hard cash...

In my case, "Will work for Monster's".... or guiness... or margaritas...

Which clip was that?

As for whether I'm gonna be on TV... Beats me. It's not unusual for there to be a camera crew following me around, but that's usually for internal documentation purposes not public release. Still, it wouldn't be the first time internal documentation became public release.

In other words, I have no idea.

I need to get on work-for-beverages terms with machinists and welders.

Even several crates (as long as it's nothing too hard) would be nothing compared to paying for contracted work.

The only problem with the work-for-beverages model is that you can't give 'em a LOT of work. The model works well if they're puttering around for an hour or two doing your stuff.... But if you have a lot of work to do? There isn't enough beer in the world. ;)

I just searched the military channel's site for "science of war." It looks like EVERYTHING they're doing there is Army-related. IE, no talk of Navy, Air Force, or Marines. If that's the case, I doubt it's me. I'm on the Navy side of the fence. True, I do sometimes do work for other services (and even other countries), but that's not the norm.
