I'm also going to start thinking about ways to make this fully automatic. That'd be nice
actually, I've been thinking of exactly the same thing... well not because I want to build a water gun but because it could be used for normal QEV guns

have look at modular valves in clippard catalogue,

I've added my own diagram... do you think it will work??

That's how it should be done as far as I can tell. You might have to do something more complicated with the flow control valve to increase the cycle frequency (i.e. have one valve and a check valve to have a certain flow rate going in and another valve and a check valve to have a certain flow rate going out), but that's it otherwise.

This should make some interesting guns, especially given that existing designs basically only need to swap some components for the upgrade... now I'm really interested in full auto QEV guns.

The pop-off approach is cheaper so I'm not sure if I'll ever go this route, but it's interesting nonetheless. The main advantage would be less wasted gas.
