I've been reading some posts about using 500-600psi and i was wondering what you would use to get this sort of pressure. Is it just a HUGE air compressor?

A fridge compressor, Regulated co2, regulated HPA or a good homemade pump.

You could reach 600psi with any of those.

The size of the compressor would be irrelevant. A minuscule sized compressor (small enough to hold in one hand) can easily get to thousands of PSI.

The size of the compressor mostly controls the volume of air it can move, not the maximum pressure.

A frig compressor is a pretty small device.

You could make a 1000 PSI compressor from small id pipe and a suitable piston. With a 1/8" cylinder it would take just ~12 pounds of force and a ~70:1 compression ratio to get to 1000 PSI.

I fire my newest cannon at 1000psi. I charge from unregulated industrial gas cylinders.

Due to the efficiencies of how much air remains in a cylinder when the piston returns and how much the remaining air expands a limits the amount of new air that will enter an already partially full cylinder, high pressure compressors are often multi stage. A single stage compressor is rarely used at over 250 PSI. Some large shop compressors for 175 PSI are 2 stage. 200 PSI seems to be the general division range between single and multi stage compressors for air.

A 500 to 600 PSI compressor will most likely be a 2 stage. 3 stage is common above 700 PSI. Paintball and SCUBA compressors are most often triple stage with a rare 4 stage.

I am working on an excel simulator for pumps. attached is the semi-completed version.

input stuff in the yellow boxes.

"pressure in" is the gauge pressure that is put in from the previous stage. so if it is the first or only stage, put in "0"
