micro compressor, the final attempt

i have been mucking around with those cheapo micro compressors for a while now, and i think i may have isolated the issue i find with them. the motor is crap. i have decided that because i can push harder than any motor of that size (i think) i am going to try (if i can) to attach a manual hand crank, instead of having a motor.







probably the only issue i will have is how do i do it so it doesn't fall apart within a few pumps...

any ideas, comments, criticisms before i start thinking more in depth about this??

maybe if you used a cheap drill in place of the motor?
thats all i can think of as they allready have cluch's so they dont burn out...

hey thats a good idea, in fact thats a great idea! how ever, i dont rly want to spent a heap of money on it, and i want to be able to use it no matter what (drill batteries die after a little while)

also i don't see a place for that chuck to grab on to, unless i remove that gear... but i think that is the only thing keeping the it balanced.... idk if i cant get this manual hand crank working ill use your idea bradisfun

That's a good idea! I never thought of taking one of those apart before. You could hook the crank up to an exercise bike hub - pressurize a cannon while improving your fitness

given the tiny stroke of the piston, the crank would have to be geared in the opposite manner to the motor, ie small pinion on the pump and a very high ratio on the crank.

as i have no idea where to get gears, and the gears are not reversible (different sized shafts) i was thinking of a 1:1 ratio.

but how to do this :S

If you don't have gears to hand you could always try pulleys and a belt drive, much easier to improvise. A 1:1 ratio will get you nowhere, the stroke volume is tiny and you'd be pumping forever.

I don't think that the motor is the problem... have you tested the motor? it's quite powerful
you might find out that it is a better idea to use a fridge compressor... and if you insist on tinkering with stuff you can try to open the case and use the compressor itself with a more powerful motor

well i was thinking about using it for a a new rifle ,which i will start working on shortly, this rifle will have a relatively small chamber volume.

but i will be on the look out for gears, and now that i think about it... i have a friend who builds and races nitro RC cars, he may know where to get gears...

if worst comes to worst, i will probably end up getting that cheap drill.....

If you're going to up the RPM, make sure you have cooling covered as these things get very hot very quickly even as standard.

I don't know how.. probably a simple CPU fan would help a bit.. but the problem is that these things are not built to last...
Mine broke down after about 2 weeks of use

it might be a better idea to get either: a fridge compressor or a good stirrup pump...

As I said earlier, if you really want to build a portable compressor I suggest modding the fridge compressor... It isn't the best idea to mod something that's crappy so forget about 12V compressors..

well I don't think you get the idea... you'll be the one who has to build it and you are going to spend some $ on this project.. I tried to point out that you probably won't be very satisfied with the results you get...

but yeah, go ahead and try it...
