newb piston idea

so me and my buddy make cannons fairly often, and he has been coming here for a while. well last night we were talking and i came up with an idea for a piston idea.. he thought it was good so i decided to post it here.

pretty much you have your chamber that you pump with air, and as the air goes the piston goes back, but instead of a valve to dump the pressurized area at the back of the chamber, where you want the cannon to fire you drill little holes around the pipe which are sealed by o-rings. there is also a coupler or somethig that the piston fits into with o-rings making a seal, when the piston hits the holes the pressure in front is released and the pressure behind the piston is relieved and shoots the piston forward launching your ammo of choice. the ammo comes in, either breach loaded or from a clip and rests in a sealed area that it can still be shot out of, you input the air behind the ammo and start the firing process. the back of the cannon is sealed, but removable to repair the piston.

So your saying the piston hits the ammo to launch it out of the barrel? That's how I understand what your saying, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not really going to give you much power, it would be a better idea to have the "piston" as the actual ammo:

i suppose that could work too... i was just thinking of making a marble gun, that would have to fire cylinders

hmm... the idea came when i was trying to picture how a normal piston valve worked... my idea seemed simpler... i had a few others, i'll add them when i have more time
