My Full time Job is Carpet cleaning. We use these fittings all the time. They start leaking water when the O ring begins to dry out. A little bit of 3 in 1 oil refreshes the ring and revives it ;) That might work for you, it can't hurt to try. Also don't put WD40 on the O ring, because WD40 is designed to expel water from areas so that will alos cause the ring to dry out... Thats our experience with our Carpet Cleaning Machines....

I only had oil left over from my air compressor, would something like that work?

That i'm not sure of.. 3 in 1 has something different in it. But i don't think it could hurt... We always have 3 in 1 for all the other parts on our truck we have to keep oiled up.

You need petroleum based oil to make rubber swell up and go soft.

The air compressor oil didn't help, just made a mess :D

I'll try some petroleum based oil next time.
