I have read a post from 2007 regarding putting a dent in the barrel to stop this problem. The balls that were discussed were 6mm plastic in a brass barrel, I have 7.5mm and 9.5mm steel balls (two different barrels of course) in aluminium barrels.

My question is will this solution work with my setup, or is a different solution required.

It will work, but since steel is harder than aluminum, the dent will wear smooth over time. An o-ring in a fitting or a spring loaded ball detent is a better idea.

Spring loaded set screws, you can find them in sizes starting from M3 thread.
