The rubber coupling, I'm guessing, is to form a better seal against the sealing face on the piston. Although a normal SCH-40 PVC coupling half can be used as well to get similar results.

Unless I'm wrong?

there is no rubber sealing face on the piston. the face of the piston is pvc. the rubber is on the barrel, not the piston.

Yeah we got that

New question:

Now I'm torn between sealing with an actual pipe through the tee or sealing with a bushing like rmich?

what yeilds more power? And will two caps back to back hinder the power as opposed to only one cap?

the two caps back to back will lengthen the valve. go with one. just put a bushing in, with a pipe through that. (did I not understand your question?)
