Infrared Sight

I was wondering if anyone has tried modifying a CVS Digital Video Camera into an infrared camera and using it as a scope/sight. Id figure that you could use this for nighttime shooting, firing "infrared bullets" (An infrared LED soldered to a AA or AAA battery).

I think you will find it very difficult to get the solder to stay attached to the flat terminals of the battery.

Actually, Ive done it already for another project (with a crappy soldering iron that is). I think the one thing you would have to be careful of is holding the soldering iron on the battery too long, not much of a guess at what might happen.

From what I've heard in a few places, a lot of those disposable cameras have a built in IR filter that can be removed fairly easily. I know instructables.com had a thing about it. Apparently you can remove the filter and get a resulting image similar to the wierd camera images in predator since you're getting IR input laid on top of the normal visible light.

I got a pair of homemade night vision goggles, which cost about 30 bucks to make, might post it up here soon.
the infared bullet idea is cool but most leds have a certain visual range (between 20 and 120 degrees usually), so you wouldn't be able to see it except for just a second, unless you had many IR leds pointing in all directions, but that would be expensive and a waste of money and extremely hard to get to get the projectle to fly right.

Yea that's a really good point. Even the wide-angle LED's aren't very good. You could see whatever the LED happened to be shining onto, but not the LED itself.

And the LEDs are pretty expensive by themselves and don't have much power, i got a kit for like 30 bucks i think from bg micro with 72 IR leds and it will only illuminate well to about 100 feet (used it for my night vision), its hard to see one IR LED at 20 feet (tiny ass little dot, and it doesn't seem to illuminate anything at that distance). But its all good cause i only use my goggles when i exploer abandon buildings and complexs.

That's why cameras with IR capability always have like 30 of the little buggers. And even then they can't see that far.

You could always buy a pair of cheap nightvison goggles for about 100 bucks, but makin your own is so much better. And yeah it takes a lot of IR LEDs to light up stuff good (my english teacher hates me when i say that).
My friend used to have instructions on how to make IR flares which would illuminate an entire city block when fired into the air, but he lives on the east coast now which blows.

Don't worry, i may get pissed at people for horrible grammar sometimes, btu I'm from Oklahoma. It's all good. My english teacher didn't hate the way I talked, he just straight up hated me. Haha.

So as for the lighted sight. Why not just shoot glowsticks?

Thats not a bad idea but it would get expensive (unless you bought in bulk), they used to have those lighted nerf things a couple years ago, that would be fun to shoot and you could reuse them.

Is the purpose of this little LED battery thing to make it only visible by you (one with the camera sight) or by anyone (with eyes). If you just want a simple solution to making the ammo visible at night then dip it in glow in the dark paint. It can be bought at most paint shops or it can be made (google it).
