i would butt them together so that none of the pressure would by put on the coupling
and i would grind off that lip in the coupling

o i see, i wouldnt bank on that being able to hold higher pressures. you may want to use some pvc epoxy on the gap. I always believe that the cannon is only as strong as its weakest part. BTW, what are the demensions of your pipe your using?, just play it safe and oder the coupler on mcmaster, it wont be too expensive and it will be deliverd the next day(good deal).
