no offence but there are a few commercially available valves like this and they are of much higher quality...

maybe you should try something different - for example an all metal 1.5" piston valve or something like that

As for marketing this...
Large flow piston valves are already being sold successfully. You'll find it difficult to enter the market unless you begin with a price lower than $30 USD, or your valve ends up having remarkable performance.

Spudding supplies in the UK are considerably more expensive, not to mention nowhere sells them. If you want to buy from the US for $30 dorllars, that's all good but then there is postage to consider. I'm sure he won't find much market in the US, but in the UK it may be another story.


If it is neatened up, it is quite possible that it would sell to novices.

That's a good price, I think I'd buy one if I hadn't got halfway through mine!

Selling a valve doesn't have any legal issues like selling a whole cannon, but you'll need to work on a way to sell it to the uninitiated because they might not be able to figure out how to turn a valve into a cannon!

Good to hear the final version will be neater, but I'm not 100% convinced that pilot area needs to be that big.

it now all fits inside a 63mm (2.5") tee, with a 50mm (2") porting, and 1" threaded pilot.


Price £40-£50 (sorry, but the parts alone are £21.50, and the piston is UBER, with check valves and o-rings.)

Piston is nylon, but i need to refine it to get it perfect. soz, my cameras broken. The reason for the large size is so it can have a large porting, plus it looks cooler. 8)

The squishy foam has 2 problems.

1) Getting a good seal with the waffle pattern to pressurize the chamber can be difficult to get a seal before pressure is enough to flatten it.

2) The soft foam is open cell so gas leaks through it and may get torn off when fired.

A smooth flat hard rubber washer may be a better choice, especially at higher pressures. You may want to test the product and be sure of the reliability.

I used this as my sealing face on my 3" piston:

Ultra-soft Polyurethane Sheet, 1/4" Thick, 4" X 4", 70 Oo Durometer

And it worked perfectly up until 40 PSI. Then after a few shots it was torn apart. I've been using a cheapo 1/8" neoprene fender washer found at the hardware store, and it's been working great ever since.

Even a piece cut from an inner tube would work better, but often this is not perfectly flat and smooth. If you are in the US, hit some True Value hardware stores. Some have sheet neoprene rubber by the sheet.

EDIT Promised photo added of neoprene at 70 cents/lb.

I need to get my glasses fixed. I didn't pay enough attention. I added some other stuff at 70 cents. It's a pound of neoprene at 3.50/lb.

I could NEVER find small amounts of neoprene or similar in the UK. I asked in 3 auto stores, and asked a few ebay sellers for samples, but had no luck.
I used inner tube in the end, with a penny washer to keep it from curling off the piston face.
I guess if you're going to be making a few, you could get a sheet though.
