here is an idea i had from looking at a few other pictures.
the system works via a hammer hitting a pin on the barrel its self, moving the barrel backwards, exposing a hole to pressurised air and pushing the projectile outwards.
will this work? and if it does, will it work well?
air rifle idea.

Something like this

A long time ago I had thought up a similar design powered by an electrically driven eccentric cam to give full auto:

Those were just concepts though, but Antonio had made a few working prototypes along those lines.

That never bothered the Bofors series of autocannon or the Browning M2 50 calchinnerz wrote:With the whole barrel moving, will it affect the accuracy significantly?
As long as it moves consistently it shouldn't be a problem.

To be honest, you're probably not going to get enough accuracy anyway that a well made moving barrel will notably affect things.chinnerz wrote:hmm, very nice. but with the whole barrel moving, will it affect the accuracy significantly?
But, as Jack points out, the M2HB uses a moving barrel - what he doesn't note however, is that the M2HB was responsible for the 20th century's longest range combat kill, at ~2500 yards.
It's a record that has only been bettered twice, and even then only by a few percent - both times, it was done by a dedicated sniper rifle.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I didn't want to bringGunny Hathcock into the debateRagnarok wrote:But, as Jack points out, the M2HB uses a moving barrel - what he doesn't note however, is that the M2HB was responsible for the 20th century's longest range combat kill, at ~2500 yards

Still a perfectly important illustration of what accuracy can be had out of a moving barrel - although it obviously can't add accuracy, it doesn't mean any has to be lost.
