What with my new 4" porting piston valve I need something to keep it from shattering in my face. I was thinking of a conical compression spring to minimize the pilot area but could not find any to suit my needs. From experience, what are some good bumpers for absorbing lots o' force.

Money is of no importance, but try to keep it reasonable.

Half a tennis ball is too small. Think 4 inches wide. The chamber of this beast will be around 5 feet of 6" sch 60 with a 4" porting valve. It needs to take lots of shock as said before.

Why not use large discs of neoprene rubber with a hole in the middle so it can port.Try using a hard neoprene then a soft neoprene then hard again and so on. I would use about 3 layers of each, should work a charm I use it in one of my Piston guns and work veyr well plus its cheap and if it needs replacing then there is no worries as it is only rubber discs.

Segments of garden hose should work fine.

Thanks a bunch guys! I'll probably end up using Rna's method simply because I have a bunch of neoprene.

Be expecting some BIG from me within the next 2 months or so.

Depending on how big your pilot is, you could prolly use 6 pool noodle segments arranged around the porting. And I can't wait to see this, 4" porting is a BEAST.

:white stuff pours out of piston: "What is that? It looks like milk."
"....Well... it's not milk."

It may be too late now, but one thing you can do is cast a bumper out of hot glue. take an inch or so of 4" pipe and a similar length of 3" pipe, center the 3" pipe in the 4" pipe. then pour hot glue into the gap between them til its 1/2" to 3/4" thick, when it cools it makes a perfect bumper. i used it behind the piston in the 3" chamber of my coaxial cannon (cast to different dimensions, of course) and it works like a charm.
