my piston valve plans
It should be able to work. The only major problem that I see is that the piston would have to fit perfectly inside the valve, and when you say a 1/2 inch ball valve that means that the inside of the valve must be smaller than that. I would recommend what JSR said and use something to get in the way of the piston instead of a ball valve.
