Pictures, dimensions and even the basic information of whether it's pneumatic or combusion would be most helpful for a useful answer.

Technically it should hold pretty well as long as your fitting is sound and your projectiles aren't too tight or heavy.

If you're using a cleanout cap on the end, don't drill through it to place the igniter. Better yet, fill the cleanout cap with body filler or fiberglass/resin. They tend to blow up more than anything else, and can potentially cause injury (especially if you're shouldering the thing).

Get some pictures up and we'll be able to give you a pretty good idea about the cannon's structural integrity. It's hard to say from your description as little things such as drilling a hole through a single layer of PVC, or the stuff Fnord mentioned, can have a significant effect on the cannon's safety.

You're not from NZ are you? Just going by the 'kiwi' username.

I would be cautious of that rear plug, the threads aren't really made to take pressure and it's a significant surface area - as Fnord suggested earlier, think about fixing it in place permanently.

Duct tape won't hurt, chicken wire is also an option - but the best way to be safe is to simply use pressure rated pipe in the first place.
