Longshot from the spudtech forums make several guns with a similar type of valve for a science fair project. Here are some cutaways of his valves that he used for demonstration.

pimpmann, the valve with 45 degree faces actually worked, it just didn't actuate well and had significantly less performance than a standard tee valve of the same size.
