Well my cousin recommended this site and said it could probably help me out. My class is entered in an "iron egg contest", if you don't know what it is, its a bunch of schools make a contraption to shot an egg the furthest, sounds stupid I know, but I'm wanting to make this an awesome experience. What I was looking at doing is making a rolling cart, have an electric air compressor on the back, then have a PVC cannon. An air chamber at the rear of the cannon, 6 inch schedule 80 at least a foot and a half long that holds 100 PSI, then a ball valve with a large cheater bar for quicker release into a 3 inch PVC pipe running about 5 feet long. I want to have the cannon barrel on a (for lac of a better word) axle at very rear so i can lift the muzzle of the barrel at different angles. Also I was thinking of making a canister for the egg with two springs on each end of the inside holding the egg so it can flex due to pressure and also put a type of foam on the inside. If you have any better ideas or designs please fill free to post them. :D

I think a captive piston with a padded or spring loaded face will be a good option.

This is a sabot:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armour-pie ... ding_sabot

And this project can easily be done for $150. If I were you, I would simply go with a modified sprinkler valve, for price, and simplicity.

Modded sprinkler valves

and also

Look around a little. A lot of your questions will be answered with most of the stickies and a few searches.

A quick note on high pressure and eggs, they break. Forces on an egg in launch will limit the pressure you can use. Build early and plan on tossing a few dozen eggs before the event to find the sweet spot where most launches don't break. I did an egg toss and had to run under 25 PSI. With a large chamber and high flow valve, we got an egg on the roof of a building on the adjacent field about 80 yards away. Eggs fly pretty well.

Possible sabot idea for a gentle egg launch is below.

yeah just like tech said 100 psi will most probably brake eggs every time, i would be a big massive low pressure chamber with a really long barrel.
