Just like a katana you could cover the parts you would like to be softer.
I'd say use a lump of clay or jbweld before you heat and quench.

You might even get a nice hada
Although in a katana that is mostly due to different carbon contents values of the composite steels...

It's been while since I last built a katana ( like 22 years.)

Hubb, its necessary every time! cause hardened spine is very fragile, even though its thick, it will last you forever if you differential heat treat it RIGHT, you can always fail it hehe

I know a little bit about it. I just gave a VERY brief synopsis. The key word is doing it "right". The heat treatment, whether it is standard or differentially treated, (to me) is dependent on what I want the knife to do. A lot of times, though, the differential heat treat isn't necessary on a file knife because of the spine. And by that, I mean the ENTIRE knife is a bit softer, say 50RC. If it's a smaller knife though, I tend to make it harder.

Now, there are a host of other factors that come into play as well, and they can play just as important a roll as the heat treatment. For example, the smaller knives I've built usually have a flat or scandi grind whereas the larger ones will have a convex, and that convex edge works pretty well with a softer edged knife.

i cant really add much, still working on sharpening the blade, aslo the dimensions are, 16cm, 2.75cm wide blad and over all length it 29cm

still got a fair bit to do, blade is 11cm long, .5cm thick, 2.4cm wide and the whole knife is 22cm long

you should give the handle a light coat of liquid electrical tape to make it a bit nicer to hold but not think enough to take the rough file marks out.

Cutted this piece of carbon steel today, its 4" wide, over 1/2" thick and around 10" long, let's see what i can come up with this
